One of my favorite hardcore songs EVER. Brutally fast and heavy. Actually, this entire record is perfect.

You've Never Heard Public Enemy's 'It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back'?! : All Songs Considered Blog : NPR

newmodelminority:

tballardbrown:

We had an intern review this album, which he had never heard before and here are some highlights from his piece:

Although my experience with hip-hop is definitely limited in scope, I’d still call myself a fan. I remember the first time I really cared about a rap song. It was the spring of 2010 and “Over” by Drake had just come out.

I’ll pause while you take that in. *hums*

OK, another highlight:

Ultimately, I have no regrets leaving It Takes A Nation on what is now an entirely metaphorical shelf. I’ll gladly say thank you, but given the choice, I’m going to blast Drake’s infectiously triumphant mp3s every time.

Some readers were unhappy with the intern’s assessment of the album and went in on him in the comments.

However, one reader comment stands out for several reasons — who the reader is and what the reader says:

Austin. I’m sure this entire response thread is brow beating you to no end. so I’m taking a different approach. i too had a hard time swallowing records that were deemed “classic” just because some adult told me so. i find its best to take in music when you have the proper context. i too found Epitaph, On The Corner, Blood On The Tracks, Exile On Main Street, & Horses “boring” and “not as good as…..(name something that was banging when i was a kid)—-but hopefully you will realize it is your duty to discover the beauty of acclaimed art and why it was so. take Springsteen’s “Nebraska” for instance an acclaimed record that was hard for an inner city hip hop fan to swallow without a backstory. so i spent an entire weekend reading every story about this album so that i could have a better grasp on what the times were like and that helped me understand (and eventually agree) why this is Springsteen’s magnum opus. i mean no one here is expecting you to be the next Lester Bangs or Rob Christgau but i do expect this generation (born some 20 years after me) with its advantages in technology to put real effort into the information it processes. there is no question Nation is one of THE greatest recordings ever. ur job is to find out why

And that, my friends, is our lesson for today.

I often make my students research the historical context out of which a piece of art arose.

This!

"

Donald wept through the proceedings. His tears soaked through the canvas that cloaked his twisted face and the stained orange jumpsuit, where with such rare distinction he once displayed the evidence of his outstanding contributions to the maintenance of a kingdom come.

But those days are gone. He’s nothing more than a number on a docket thick with shareholders, engineers, PR firms, politicians: war-profiteers.

“How the fuck did I end up here? This just isn’t fair. Ain’t no place for a millionaire.” He searches for the words to stop this table in mid-turn, like, “We are but old men,” and, “We only did what we were told,” but the laughter from the gallery drowns out these vestiges of a profession’s oldest defense.

“The court will direct the record to reflect compliments from the bench; you, sir, are Central Casting’s crowning achievement. And for your outstanding performance in a comedic role, I’d like to dedicate the findings of the jury to the dead.”

But how can one man ever repay a debt so appalling? Can’t gouge 10,000 eyes from a single head, so I think we should observe a sentence that will serve to satisfy both a sense of function and poetry: So you will spend the rest of your days drenched in sweat, with your face drawn in a rictus of terror as you remove another buried land mine fuse. Meanwhile, 100 yards back behind the sandbags, a legless foreman pulls the trigger on a red megaphone.

Squelching feedback. Drunken laughter. Broken English. His dead daughter’s picture.

Time and tide, no one can anticipate the inevitable waves of change.

"

— “Iteration,” by Propagandhi, off of Potemkin City Limits (2006). One of my favorite songs, and some of the most powerful lyrics I’ve ever read. Good shit.

From Ashes Rise - Nightmares
One of the heaviest hardcore records ever, with a healthy dose of crusty goodness. Epic in scope with a lot of wonderfully spacey passages, and definitely some of the best political lyrics in all of punk rock. This vinyl was actually really hard to get my hands on before they did a repressing because it constantly disappeared because SO MANY PEOPLE LOVE THIS RECORD.

Soundtrack to writing: Year Zero by Nine Inch Nails
So, despite having like 800 unanswered Asks in my inbox (!!!!!!!!!!!!!), I can’t really devote time to answering any of them because I have a large chunk of writing and editing to do today. On top of writing about yesterday’s Doctor Who and starting The Golden Compass, I’m going to try to get ten more “chapters” done in the Mark Reads Twilight ebook, which is coming along rather nicely. Formatting for an ebook is a tad bit challenging, both in terms of the logistics of any ol’ book, but I have to re-adapt pieces I wrote that are image- and gif-heavy so that they’ll work for a Kindle, iBook, Google Books, and any other mobile readers. It’s fun to do it, but time-consuming, but I hope to have Mark Reads Twilight available for purchase (AT A LOW CLOSEOUT PRICE) in the next ten days. (And for the person who asked: Yes, they will be DRM-free.)
Anyway, so while I’m trudging through this, I thought I’d just update today with photos of records I’m cycling through to give me inspiration as I hang out with my laptop all day. A lot of people wonder what sort of music I do listen to, so here’s a bit of a sample of my taste. Enjoy!
